The material of this puzzle glass is of good quality. It is translucent, almost colourless and the molten glass contains only a few larger bubbles.
Shape
The stem consists of five hollow balls (Hohlpuffen) which are connected to each other and to the cuppa. At the top they become more narrow. The 27.5 cm high drinking vessel is wobbly even when empty and difficult to clean inside.
Surface
The puzzle glass is made of clear, high-quality material and has a gold rim, but otherwise bears no decoration. The importance of this glass lies in its shape.
Function
If the puzzle glass is tilted while drinking, the incoming air pushes the liquid out in batches. This procedure causes gurgling sounds and the drink is poured over the drinker’s face and clothing.
Significance
Not helpful to good table manners! Puzzle glasses had an established place at evening festivities where alcoholic drink played an important role. The level of drunkenness reached by the guests relaxed the otherwise fixed social ranking.
